Over the past few decades, the role of women, their preferences, their style, and the way they express themselves has evolved a lot. We’ve come from corsets and crinoline skirts to comfy ‘jammies and the LBD. Especially for Indian women, the change has been massive. Our clothes have represented increasing freedom of choice and movement. Garments have gone beyond being symbols of modesty to a palette for self-expression.
So, what are the things that need to be kept in mind while designing for the modern woman? We’ve got some tips that will help you nail it!
Comfort is the key
Since the past few years, there’s been an increased focus on comfort. Being comfortable in your own skin is the new mantra in the fashion world. Clothes that make you feel at home even during a night out with friends are all the craze. And who said these can’t be chic and stylish? High-end brands now swear by outfits that are gorgeous from the outside, but snug and relaxing on the inside. The pandemic-induced work-from-home has further cemented our love for comfortable clothing.
The art of self-expression
It is important for clothes to carry with them a sense of personality. With fashion as the biggest medium of expression for modern women, our outfits need to have the versatility to match with her different traits and go in sync with her moods.
On the road to inclusivity
We live in a world that is striving to move towards diversity and inclusivity. The outfits need to cater to such a world with every woman wanting something different for herself. There needs to be equality in choices for different shapes, sizes, and body types. It also must be kept in mind that gender-norms are being challenged and gender lines being blurred. Make way for the androgynous, gender-fluid clothing!
Pockets, pockets, and pockets
Pockets in women’s clothing, or lack thereof, have been a topic of discussion forever (or at least since it was acceptable for women to wear pants) and it is astonishing how the issue still remains. By now we all must be aware of the false pockets or those too small to even keep a coin in. Even as there are some brands who’ve grown more sensitive towards the issue, we still need a worldwide revolution that helps add a much-needed element of functionality to women’s clothing.
Sustainability for the win
The environmentally conscious women today don’t just see the product, but also where it comes from. They pay utmost attention to the ethical values of brands. They’re constantly looking for fashion that is produced and procured in an ecological manner. Having it last long enough to become a family heirloom that can be treasured and passed on from generation to generation, has become more and more important.
All-in-all, fashion needs to shed its one-size-fits-all approach and fit the individual style, personality, and mindset of women of all shapes and sizes. The best method to do this is by observing your audiences, understanding what they want, and measuring their relationship with what they wear.
