With the proud association with Kala Ghoda Arts Festival 2015 as its design partner this year, a rage of excitement gushed into our students, alumni and faculty. A ravishing fashion is being organised by Pearl Academy at the fest on February 13th which will witness many eminent Bollywood celebrities. The fashion show has been created keeping three themes in mind which are as follows :-
Steel Magnolias – An impetus, given to the conventionally monotonous neutrals- muted greys, off-whites, mushroom and browns, by the stimulating elements of fine hand crafting, kindles the senses only to yield a blend of contrasting emotions. The details in the garments inject a gust of the oomph into the otherwise serene collection of garments. These details are a product of techniques that require soft and sensitive handling of the material. Driven by the ideas of comfort, purity and organicity, the silhouettes wallow into the touch (sparsh) of nature.
Nomadic wave – With a resurgence of surface treatment techniques from the traditional past, juxtaposed with pigments in earthy tones, indigo and reds, this collection hums bohemian melodies. A wave of rich artsy techniques flows into a series of fresh, free spirited and eccentric ensembles, with lengthened garments that seem to be falling into eternity. Every garment part of the aforementioned collection is made with the purpose of delivering the sparsh of crude and unmilled beauty.
Tokyo Drift – A multifold, avant-garde amalgamation of lurid and edgy aesthetics; adopted from the Nihon-jin, oriental natives. Following the lines of the Japanese idea living in and for the future, this collection of inventive silhouettes lends a glance at the future of wearing. Each garment is prudently designed and crafted to touch the essence of wearable art, and yet return to the rudimentary purpose of clothing ourselves. The collection is a combination of surface details, colors and patterns borrowed from the Japanese youth cult of Harajuku, unfathomable space-age possibilities and the construction of the garment as a form.
The Academy is enthralled with huge participation, especially from its alumni base. To name a few, alumna Pooja Malhotra fits one of the themes above through her collection called FIMBULVETR. The collection is inspired by the magical world of Narnia and is a tribute to the creator of the series, CS Lewis. Revolving around the idea of creation and spontaneity in its most raw form, the collection has one-off, bespoke handmade pieces of design created using crochet and macramé.
Pooja Malhotra is a freelance Costume Designer and a Macramé Artist. With a B.A. (H) in Fashion Design from Pearl Academy and an M.A. in Costume Design for Performance from London College of Fashion, she has displayed her works at the Victoria And Albert Museum, London and quite recently at the Lilian Baylis Studio-Sadler’s Wells, London. She is currently working on a Macramé project in collaboration with a Toronto based artist.
