Teachers and students at Pearl Academy get together to work towards making a difference
5th November, 2014, Jaipur: Pearl Academy, the leading higher education institute in design, fashion and related businesses, observes the ‘Global Days of Service’ from 4th Nov – 5th Nov, 2014 in the pink city. This initiative was an opportunity for all the campuses of Pearl Academy, including Kukas based campus, to collectively work towards making a global impact by volunteering to do something that can bring about a change in the society. The Academy is a member of the Laureate International Universities network, which has a presence in 29 countries serving more than 950,000 students.
Pearl Academy collaborated with two NGO’s – Manthan Sansthan and Umang for the two days of service where volunteering Pearlites and Academy faculty visited with them to the remote villages Baswa, Baskho and Sikandra apart from organising a workshop for special children within the premises of the Academy.
On day one, with the members from Manthan Sansthan, Pearlites planted trees in Baswa village and visited Baskho village later to interact with its textile cluster where a community lunch was organized by the villagers. The visit was an eye-opener for the volunteers providing all of them an opportunity to understand the livelihood, social structure and the cultural expression of the artisans and craftsmen in their natural setups in the villages.
Day two of service where a workshop was organized for the differently-abled children was principally organized as an effort for community outreach and to invoke a sense of responsibility and belongingness with one another, especially towards the less fortunate. Children from NGO Umang were trained by Pearl faculty to design lamp shades, coasters, carry bags, greeting cards, jewellery pouches etc. during the 3 hour workshop. These extremely talented children were happy to learn new skills and enjoyed with Pearlites during games, dance party organized specially for them.
Speaking about the initiative, Dr. Veena Dutta, Director, Pearl Academy, Jaipur, said, “At Pearl Academy, we believe in inculcating the best values among our students, in a way which allows them to explore their creativity and use their skills towards the benefit of the society. Our endeavor is to enable them to think beyond the conventional and provide holistic solutions for problems that people face on a day-to-day basis. This initiative is a great opportunity for students to understand the challenges faced by different sectors of the society and work to make it better.”
