The internet has been buzzing with the resurgence of Y2K fashion in the past couple of months. Celebrities like Bella Hadid, Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber have aced the look and taken the millennials down the memory lane. Love it or hate it, you can’t help but notice the Y2K aesthetic. It’s official: Y2K season is here, and it’s here to stay.
So, what exactly is Y2K? As the name suggests, Y2K, or the year 2000s, was the fashion trend from the late 1990s to the early 2000s. Baby tees, popcorn tops, space buns, wide-legged pants, denim on denim, and claw clips are all on the menu. Think Poo from K3G and Regina George from Mean Girls! Y2K has a distinctive style that combines pop culture, futuristic fashion, and technological breakthroughs of the time. It was an era of fashion mixed with fun, and adding that touch of extra to your outfits.
Today’s Y2K fashion is partly carefree and partly nostalgic. The experimental Gen Z has reimagined the trend to suit their style and made quite a bold statement. If you want to look trendy yourself, here’s how to incorporate the streetwear-meets-glamour style into your everyday wardrobe without seeming like you’re having a mid-life crisis!
1.Level up with platform heels
A great way to elevate your height and style are the platform heels. After the candy pink Versace platforms marched down the Fall 2021 runways, those chunky heels became a wardrobe must-have. If you have an appetite for pieces with panache, then add these platforms to your shoe racks and take your fashion game to new heights.
2.Meet the mini once again
Mini skirts are your best friends this summer, and they’re the perfect form-fitting companion to cropped tees. Play with colours and textures to achieve the right combination of nostalgia and novelty.
3.Track your suits
It’s impossible to think of Y2K fashion and not think of Paris Hilton or Kim Kardashian in their luxe sets. Simple, utilitarian, and easy to style, velours are your best buds to travel or sleepover with friends. Do it the Y2K way!
4.Glisten like glitter
Shiny dresses were a big component of Y2K fashion, giving off futuristic vibes. This fashion piece is the right quotient of glitz and glam. Pearlites were spotted fusing technology with art and producing a fragmented costume in the Portfolio ‘22. A visual feast!
5.Go for some bling
Fun and frolic dominated the ‘00s fashion. Playful accessories adds character to an otherwise minimal outfit. Accessorize using nostalgia-inducing pieces like beaded chokers, butterfly clips and colourful sunglasses and rule the world.
6.Mini purse, major poise
These might not fit your phone, but who cares? The arm candy is back and in a big way. Sport those small shoulder bags such as baguette bags and saddlebags for a stylish look.
Fashion is cyclical in nature and the love for vintage fashion has seen a surge in the past few years. However, is this the final goodbye, or will Gen Alpha continue the legacy? Speculations are that they will, with an added oomph! If you have an eye for vogue too and want to stay ahead of trends, then our School of Fashion has many surprises up its sleeve for you!
